Most of us are voluntarily sleep-deprived, but there are also millions of Americans with insomnia—that is, they can’t sleep. Nearly everyone encounters this problem occasionally, but for many people insomnia becomes a chronic problem lasting weeks, months, even years.
In our Resilience Training Program, we find that most participants suffer from chronic insomnia. And though treating insomnia is not a central part of the program, nearly everyone’s sleep improves. According to our early data, the average amount of sleep increases from five hours to seven hours per night by the end of the program. I believe this is one of the main reasons people feel so much better.
Here is the advice that I share with the participants for getting a good night’s sleep. There are three common patterns to insomnia:
